Artist statement
My work is about surveillance and data: cameras left open online, edits to Wikipedia, voices fed through neural networks. I build software that runs live in the room: it pulls in material from networks, cameras or recordings and turns it into sound and image while the audience watches.
In Please Set a Password, live feeds from surveillance cameras left open on the internet are projected as they are found, and the sound is synthesised from what the images contain. There Will Be No More Determination uses a neural network trained on military helicopter footage, so the output still reads as aerial war vision but no longer shows a scene. Wikyslavery inserts misleading edits into Wikipedia and makes visible the unpaid work of the people who correct them. Fonema passes recorded voices through a neural network until they still sound like speech but stop meaning anything.
I studied electronic music at the Conservatorio Niccolò Piccinni in Bari. The same tools I use for these pieces, Max/MSP and real-time synthesis, are the ones I use to build instruments for Ableton Live.
